The Witch’s Crystal by Devon Gambrell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Finally!! It’s here!! Most-anticipated book release. Highly recommend to all high fantasy readers who love strong female leads, magic and suspense.
I’ve had the immense pleasure and honour to work as critique partner on this book for last three years, and I’m giving my very honest review. I’ve bought my ebook and I’ll be buying the paperback, too, since I love the story so much. Amabel forever!!!
The story captured my attention from the first page where the settings unravel together with the plot opening. The first chapter is expertly written. We see Tannis meeting Amabel at a tavern. Their banter is deliciously intriguing. All throughout the book, their chemistry is unavoidable, while also foreshadowing past events that have brought them together. There’s romance, mystery, action, magic, creatures, nature, and lots more.
Derek is another formidable morally grey character. You can either love him or hate him, but you can’t stop thinking about what he’s going to do next. There are loads of other characters that keep you engaged and wanting to read more.
The magic systems and the crystal are very different from what you usually see in fantasy novels. Terrific world-building. Palace intrigue, court politics, war, peace, trade and commerce, everything is clearly woven into the plot.
I can’t really find anything to criticise. I’ve enjoyed the book very much and I am looking forward to more books from this author.

Imagine being given the chance for revenge with the backing of an army.

The Jasden Massacre happened eight years ago and still haunts the survivors today. It will take a prince, a knight–sorcerer, and a cursed witch to bring down the court of the Sleeping Queen.

Derek wants the throne to save his country from ruin. But the Sleeping Queen’s supporters want him dead. In order to take the Crown, Derek will need to draw out his enemies with the promise to revive Queen Fazune using the Witch’s Crystal.

The Crystal is in the Netherworld, and it will take a powerful witch and an even more powerful sorcerer to get it. Tannis, his family disgraced by the cowardliness of his father, will embark on the journey and clear his family’s name. But Amabel is eccentric and more than a little annoying, and her family is holding secrets that make him wonder if they can be trusted. Fighting his attraction, he protects her from danger and sometimes herself.

Amabel has her own needs for the Crystal and Queen Fazune. She cares little for Derek so long as he doesn’t interfere with her plans. On the other hand, she doesn’t mind the powerful sorcerer Tannis as a distraction. As they travel, she lays the plans to bring down the current crown of Lensavine.

With her family’s lives on the line, she will do whatever it takes. Even if she has to die.
